Hello! You must Bridezilla!

I knew it wouldn't take long for my inner bridezilla to appear! She's not quite reared her ugly head just yet, she's merely taking a peek out, testing the air and generally letting me (and G!) know that she's there. And the reason for her dubut appearance? A possible change in venue.

As a bit of a recap, myself and G had already found the venue as close to perfect as we can get for our budget. After hours and hours of research we discounted dozens of venue around London that, although stunning wedding locations, were just too expensive for us. We found somewhere with a more realistic hire fee and who wouldn't charge us corkage. This option is still going to cost us a big whack of dosh as feeding 100 people is never going to come cheap. But I now realise that the venue, the food and drink are important to me and we are prepared to spend the vast majority of our budget getting these things right and compromising in other areas.

But G has now thrown a spanner into the works with another venue suggestion. The venue in question is actually owned and run by a family friend. Its a restaurant with a courtyard area where they put a marquee up. To be honest its not my cup of tea and I wouldn't be considering it only for the fact that there might be a cost saving. My inner bridezilla is telling me to put my foot down now and just be honest that I'm not overly keen and that I don't want to waste anybody's time by letting people think that we're interested. The more sensible part of me is saying go see it, at least hear the guy out and see what he can offer us. What do you think? Am I being a princess by not wanting to consider it? Or should I stick with my gut feeling and admit I'm not willing to compromise with this venue?

Maybe I'm picking holes now but I'm also concerned about the fact that this place is owned and run by someone close to G's family, mixing business with pleasure and all that. I'm under no allusion that planning this wedding is at times going to be stressful and at some stages along the way people are going to make mistakes, not do something I ask or just generally peev me off. I have two ways of dealing with this kind of frustration. One is to let loose at the person causing my frustration until they rectify the problem. The other is to not say anything but seethe inside and have a whinge to those around me. Either reaction is not going to do me any good in forging a better relationship with my in-laws if the source of my frustration is their friend!

So what should I do? Am I being an utter bridezilla by not wanting to consider this other option? Is the sensible thing to at least go talk to the guy? Advice appreciated!

Baby's Breath

Gypsophila, or Baby's Breath, whichever you prefer to call it, has until recently only been used as a filler in wedding bouquets and floral arrangements. But this in expensive flower is now holding its own amongst the more traditional blossoms as brides are beginning to choose Baby's Breath as their primary wedding flower. Whether you chose it as the main floral attraction or you simply want to incorporate small accents, have a look at how you can bring a bit of Baby's Breath into your day.

There is something very soft and delicate about this understated flower and Baby's Breath bouquets can have just the same wow factor as more elaborate bouquets.

A Real Wedding - Ailsa & Adrian

I have a special treat for you today, the beautiful real wedding of Ailsa and Adrian at The Monastery, a truly awe-inspiring venue in the south-east of Manchester city.

This wedding was shot by the talented Neil Redfern and it was his first wedding that he has covered at the Monastery. "The Monastery is truly stunning" says Neil. "The main hall itself just takes your breath away as soon as you walk in. It really is amazing".

Following a multi-million pound restoration scheme, the Monastery is quickly becoming one of the UK's most inspiring wedding venues and shows just what hidden treasures can be discovered on our urban doorstop.

Congratulations Ailsa and Adrian!

Belt and Braces

Well ok, not so much the braces...but I have to say I'm loving some of the belted style wedding dresses around at the moment. If you're looking for a more on-trend look but don't want something completely out there, then belts and sashes can bring a modern twist to a traditional dress. Check out some of my favourite below...

Matching the belt colour to your overall colour scheme is one option but I love the contrast of black on white on this Modern Trousseau dress (left below). The simple and delicate beading on this Rosa Clara dress (right below) adds a touch of sparkle to the classic A-line gown.

Left: Modern Trousseau 'Wallis'
Right: Rosa Clara 'Leslie'

For a glamorous 50's inspired look try this Stephanie Allin wide-belted dress (left below) which believe it or not has pockets! Now thats a novel idea! The black lace band on this Littlewoods dress (right below) gives it a subtle vintage feel.
Left: Stephanie Allin 'Kelly'
Right: Littlewoods

Belts can work just as well with shorter styles, like on these Charlotte Balbier and Jasmine Bridal dresses:

The pretty pink bow belt highlights the empire line of this stunning Justin Alexander dress (below left) while the Enzoani dress (below right) comes with a choice of either a ribbon or beaded sash.

If you've already bought your dress and are looking to bling it up a little then  try Etsy. I found these beautiful floral belts and embellished sashes which could add a bespoke twist to your gown.

Save The Date

If my wedding checklist is correct then the next job on my list is to think about save the date cards. Now according to the stationary guru Kathryn Deeley, save the dates are essential if you plan to get married at certain times of year when people might otherwise be on holiday. As we're hoping to get married on Easter Saturday we're going to send out save the dates just a little under a year in advance to give people the heads up early and allow loads of time for my family and friends to book their flights.

I'm quite excited about the prospect of getting stuck into my first big DIY project of the wedding. The internet is full of funky ideas for save the dates so if you've got the time and the patience to DIY it, get your camera out and get creative! You can even follow the latest trend of making save the date fridge magnets with magnetic photo paper.

If printing, cutting, folding, sticking and gluing several hundreds of pieces of paper isn't your idea of a fun weekend then maybe its best to leave the stationary to the professionals. Green With Envy

I don't know whether I'm just feeling a bit patriotic but I've got some serious love for emerald green at the moment. Its the perfect colour to incorporate into a December wedding if you don't want to go for the obvious Christmasy reds. For an autumnal feel jazz up emerald green with some subtle gold accents.

Check out some of my favourite emerald green incorporations on the mood board. My favourite has to be those high-heeled shoes. I know I'd never be able to walk very far in them, but they're lush! Another item for my Santa list I think!

Wedding Planning Update

I thought it was about time I did an update on where we are with our wedding planning. After visiting our favourite venue a couple of weeks ago we've now got a few catering quotes. I thought researching and choosing the venue would be the hardest part but oh no! I am currently knee deep in prices per head. And I have a little confession to make...until last week I'd never heard of the word caterhire (oh the shame!).

The caterers I have spoken to have been really lovely but they're asked a lot of questions, most of which I haven't been able to answer. What style of food do we want? Should it fit into the overall theme? What is the theme of the day? Eeeek, its all a bit overwhelming!

And thats before we even get to the canapes. How long do we want our drinks reception to last for? How much time are we allowing for photographs? How many canapes per guest? Three? Five? Seven apparently if they are hungry buggers! And then theres the meal. Do we have a type of food in mind? Would we prefer individual starters or a sharing plate? Chicken, beef, pork, salmon or duck for main course? What is the veggie option? AHHHHH!!!! I know the caterers need this information in order to give us an accurate quote, but this is all a bit too specific for me at the moment!

In an attempt to save my sanity we've arranged a meet with one of the caterers soon when we'll get to sample some of their food, yum yum! In the meantime I've found myself a 16 month wedding checklist and am working my way through it. Next job on the list - get wedding insurance.

Rings

Since getting a frosty reception from the man in a well known jeweller when I enquired about getting my engagement ring valued for insurance purposes, I've vowed not to step foot in that shop ever again! So now the plan is to buy our wedding rings from a small and independent jeweller. In my search for something different I've come across these unique rings on Etsy. I have my concerns about buying a ring online as I'm worried about not being able to try it on before I buy. What if it doesn't suit my engagement ring? Hmmm, maybe I just need to take a leap of faith on this one!

Here are some of my favourite.

I absolutely love this handmade 14k white gold ring. It has a hammered effect which catches the light beautifully and is also available in Palladium and Platinum.

Another beautiful find was this 14k white gold and diamond leaf ring which could be used as either an engagement or wedding ring. This is also available in platinum.

If you are after an unusual take on matching his 'n hers rings then check out these crater texture silver rings, also available in gold and palladium. I love the crater-like recesses in these rings and the fact that each ring is completely unique as the texture is create by hand-carving.

If H2B is looking for something out of this world then have a look at this Meteorite ring. This is a stunning alternative to the traditional gold or platinum band and comprises of copper, titanium, gibeon meterorite and iron wood.

In a nod to my celtic roots I found this beautiful 18k White Gold and Palladium knot band. The knots on this hand-carved ring are sculpted in the round which gives them a wonderful three dimensional feel.

A Million Ways With...

...Mason Jars

Now that we're finally making some headway with our choice of venue, I'm beginning to give more thought to the smaller aspects of our wedding, like decoration. I know that once the big budget items such as catering, alcohol, photographer (and of course the dress!) are accounted for, there won't be a whole lot left in the pot for decor. So DIY decorations here we come! I love the idea of using mason jars, jam jars or even washed out Dolmio jars to create inexpensive decorations, lighting, centrepieces or even favours. Here are some of my favourite DIY mason jar ideas...

Mason jar vases can be used as centrepieces or dotted around your venue to add a splash of colour to a Spring wedding. These DIY floral centrepieces can be made for a fraction of the cost of a professional version using large jars, hessian and ribbon, a few limes and daffodils, which are probably the cheapest flowers to buy in the Spring.

Create romantic evening lighting with these doily wrapped jars. Again they would look great dotted around your venue or placed on the tables after dinner. See a tutorial on how to make these beautiful luminaries here

If like me you need to hire in all the equipment, crockery, glasses etc into your venue, save some pennies on glass hire for your reception drinks by serving cocktails in mason jars. Its a cute and quirky alternative to a champagne reception. You can even go all out and create your own concoction of cocktail for your special day.

Budget Savvy Bride of the Week

In a dream world we'd all have an unlimited wedding budget and cost would have no bearing on our planning. But back on reality ranch with the average cost of a wedding in the UK being £15,500 (and thats down from the pre-recession average of £20k!) most of us need to find ways of cutting costs here and there.

New to the WedinLondon blog is our Budget Savvy Bride of the Week. Each week we'll bring you the top penny-saving tips from a real bride or bride-to-be.

In the hot seat this week is Claire (aka Shoe Gal), a bride-to-be from Norwich who is planning her April 2012 wedding to her fiance Andrew after an out of the blue and super romantic proposal on a local beach.

Hi Claire! Congratulations on your engagement and welcome to the blog. Tell us how your planning is coming along.

"The main thing that has shocked me has been just how expensive everything is. It honestly seems as though all normality goes out of the window and when you mention the dreaded 'W' word, prices just double or even treble. The sad thing is that it seems as though most people will pay these wildly inflated prices because 'it's the biggest day of your life'. Now, I do agree it will be the biggest (and probably still the most expensive) day of my life, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to give up being a bargain hunter! We decided our budget based upon the money we had so kindly been offered by family added to the maximum that we thought we could realistically save. Suffice to say, I never wanted to actually spend this amount of money, but it was good to know the maximum that we had available to us."

That sounds like a very sensible approach to your budget. Have your bargain hunting skills been put to the test yet?

"The first thing we booked was the venue. We got a good deal on our ceremony venue so no haggling was required. However, when it came to the reception venue, it was more than we had planned on paying. We managed to have a good haggle, and by cutting out a couple of drinks (surely one arrival drink is enough?!) and choosing cheaper menu options, we saved a whopping £7.50 per person. This will probably save us around £450. We also opted for fish and chip cones in the evening in place of a buffet - personally I much prefer this option, and it is also around £900 cheaper!"

And what about the all-important dress?

"I went to 4 wedding dress shops, and after making second visits to a couple I finally decided which dress was 'the one'. The only problem was that it was £1,000. Now, whilst I had the budget to spend this, I can honestly say that the thought of spending so much on something I would only wear once made me feel physically sick! I signed up to sites like Preloved and Sell My Wedding Dress in the hope that someone might be selling the dress I loved. Then, I was looking on Ebay one day and typed in the model of the dress, I wasn't hopeful as had never seen one sold on there before. However, the exact dress I was looking for popped up, and - RESULT - it was brand new! It was 2 sizes too big, but that didn't bother me, it's easy enough for someone to make it smaller. I looked into it and discovered that the dress was being sold by a lady in Wales who owns a wedding dress shop. A few emails back and forth and I learned that it was a shop sample that had only ever been tried on 3 times and was apparantly in immaculate condition. It was advertised at £500 but it had the option of making an offer - so I cheekily offered £455 (including delivery) and was absolutely amazed that I won it. I was a little bit dubious as to whether my bargain hunting would pay off so couldn't relax until it had been delivered. The dress arrived a few days later, incredibly well packaged, and it was perfect - what a relief! The other bonus was that I had purchased the dress through Ebay but also by going through a cashback website, so I also earned £9 in cashback."

Thats an incredible saving on a brand new dress. Well done Claire! Have you thought about your accessories to go with the dress yet?

"As I'm sure you can tell from my name, I'm a shoe person! With this in mind, I always dreamed that I would have a beautiful pair of designer shoes to wear on my wedding day. From the moment we got engaged and started looking at the budget, I realised that this was going to be near impossible. So I started saving straight away and hoped that I may find a bargain somewhere along the way. I set up searches on Ebay to look for Jimmy Choos and Manolos in my size and checked them all the time to make sure I didn't miss out. Then, one day when my H2B and I were away in Birmingham, I was playing around with Ebay on my phone and found the most perfect pair of Jimmy Choos I had ever seen - and they were in my size! Unfortunately, I didn't trust buying things on my phone, so waited until we got home the next day and signed straight into Ebay. I was devastated - the shoes had ended; but hang on...no-one had bid on them. I, rather cheekily, emailed the seller and asked if the shoes were still available. She said that they were and asked how much I was willing to pay. They had been on Ebay at £250 (brand new) plus about £8 postage. I decided to start low and offered to pay £200 in total - unbelievably, she accepted! I paid on the Friday and by Monday, they were being delivered. They are the most beautiful pair of shoes, and yes I know that £200 may not sound like a bargain, but they are still for sale on the Jimmy Choo website for almost £500!"

Wow, thats fantastic! So has your bargain hunting stopped there?

"No way! We have got plenty more bargains along the way. Mainly we have just haggled with everything as we are both so aware that the mark up on anything 'wedding' is so high. We have managed to negotiate cheaper rates with our photographer, videographer, transport, entertainment, florist and plan on haggling for pretty much everything!"

Thanks for sharing your Budget Savvy Bride Tips Claire! Its really inspired me to not accept the first price thats offered. Can't wait to put my haggling skills to the test!
